Event Overview
The Hug An Athlete 5K is a community run, walk, or roll event in Belvidere, Illinois. The event is organized by the Belvidere Park District's Special Recreation program.
Location and Course
The event takes place at Doty Park on West Locust Street. The course uses the Kishwaukee Riverfront paths, starting near the Doty Park Pavilion and continuing across the river into Belvidere Park. The paths are ADA accessible. A water station is located at approximately 1.2 miles, and the course is marked for miles 1 and 2.
Registration and Fees
Registration is available with tiered pricing. Race day registration is available for a fee. Children 5 and under are free and do not need to register. Packet pickup is offered on the Friday before the event and on race day at the park.
Awards and Post-Race
Awards are given to overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in multiple age groups. Special race awards are also given. After the race, participants can meet athletes from the Special Recreation program. Snacks and hot cocoa are provided for finishers.
Beneficiary
All net proceeds benefit the Belvidere Park District's Special Recreation Pirate athletes. Funds support new sports equipment, uniforms, scholarships, and program growth for Special Olympics sports. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
