About the race
Hobbit Trail Runs is a weekend of trail races held in Hogsback, Eastern Cape, set around mountain and indigenous forest terrain with the Hogsback mountain at its heart. The event runs from 30 April to 2 May 2027 and features multiple race options staged across three days with eight race starts so entrants can combine stages across the weekend.
Races on the programme include:
- 90 km Hobbit Nonstop along the Amathole Hiking Trail (36 hours limit)
- 42 km Mountain Marathon
- 21 km Half Marathon
- 16 km Forest Fun
- 10 km Trail
- 8 km Night Run
- 5 km Fun (runs on two days)
The Hobbit 90km traverses mostly single-track mountain paths with significant elevation change (approximately 4800 m gain, 4100 m loss), remote sections, checkpoints and staffed aid stations, and a drop-bag served at Mnyameni Hut (55 km). Entrants to the 90 km must submit proof of relevant experience and motivation; runners are expected to be self-sufficient on the trail and to carry compulsory safety kit. Other race routes use plantation jeep tracks, singletrack and forest trails and include marked watertables and aid points. The weekend is organised to include family and friends, with shorter runs and village finish-line activity in Hogsback. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
