Event Overview
This is the 27th edition of the Highland Forest 1-2-3 Trail Run. It takes place on marked trails within Highland Forest County Park in Fabius, New York. The event is described as an "old school" race with minimal cost and minimal aid stations.
Race Format and Distances
The event consists of running one, two, or three loops of the same course. Participants can select their distance:
- 1 Loop: 10 miles with 1380 feet of climb.
- 2 Loops: 20 miles with 2760 feet of climb.
- 3 Loops: 31 miles (50K) with 4140 feet of climb.
To introduce variety, the direction of each loop changes: the first 10-mile loop is run in the reverse direction from the previous year. Participants running two loops will reverse direction for their second loop, while those running three loops can choose their direction for the third loop. It is possible to switch to a shorter race distance during the event, provided time cutoffs are met.
Logistics and Facilities
The race starts and finishes at the Community Pavilion in Highland Forest County Park, located across the road from the parking lot. Bib pickup and registration begin at the Community Pavilion. Parking is free, though donations to the park are welcomed. Restrooms are available in a separate building near the pavilion; there are no shower facilities at the park.
Course and Conditions
The course is approximately 95% hiking trails and 5% dirt roads, featuring a mix of single-track and wider logging lanes. Trail conditions can include mud, roots, gravel, and soft pine needles. Runners should be prepared for the possibility of encountering wildlife, insects like black flies, and vehicles on dirt road sections. Trail markers (blazes) are used, and runners are advised to watch for them closely.
Aid and Support
Support on the course is minimal. One water stop is planned at approximately the 5-mile point. The start/finish area will have water and fuel available. Runners are advised to carry their own hydration and fuel. After the run, food and beverages, including grilled items, are provided at the Community Pavilion.
Time Cutoffs
There are time cutoffs for continuing to the next loop: a 3-hour cutoff to begin the second loop and a 4.5-hour cutoff to begin the third loop. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
