Harz-Gebirgslauf (Brocken-Marathon)
The Harz-Gebirgslauf is a long-standing nature running event held in the Harz National Park, starting and finishing in Wernigerode (Himmelpforte). The event features a variety of distances for runners, walkers, and Nordic walkers through forest terrain.
Participants can choose from several running distances:
- 42.2 km (Brocken-Marathon) with 1180 meters of elevation gain. This route leads to the summit of the Brocken, where participants encounter high-mountain climate conditions. There is a participant limit of 1000 persons for this distance.
- 22.5 km (Half Marathon) with 530 meters of elevation gain.
- 11.2 km with 280 meters of elevation gain.
- 4.8 km with 120 meters of elevation gain.
- 2 km (Brockenkinder-Lauf) for children aged 5 to 10.
For those interested in non-competitive formats, the event offers 11 km and 25.1 km routes for walking and Nordic walking.
Timekeeping for all participants is conducted via an EasyChip attached to the shoe. For the marathon distance, a time limit is enforced: runners who do not pass the Brocken summit by 12:00 PM are removed from the classification. The general finish line for all distances closes at 3:00 PM. The marathon course crosses the tracks of the Brocken Railway; runners must follow the instructions of safety marshals if a train approaches.
The event provides refreshment stations along the courses, and facilities such as showers and cloakrooms are available in the start and finish area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
