Hahns Peak Vertical Trail Race

The Hahns Peak Vertical Trail Race is an out-and-back trail event that begins at the Quarry Lot north of Hahns Peak Village. The course is 8 miles total, with approximately 4 miles of ascent to the fire lookout tower and 4 miles back to the finish.

The route rises to a summit with a fire lookout built in 1912. The final approach and descent include loose rock and a talus slope; chutes are marked on that section to guide ascent and descent. The trail surface is predominantly single track and trail, with sections of jeep road and talus slope. Total elevation gain on the course is about 2,200 feet.

Organizers operate a go cup less policy; participants are expected to carry their own hydration. Aid stations are provided roughly at mile 2 on the ascent and mile 6 on the descent, offering water and Honey Stinger products. No water is available on the summit.

Awards are given for top finishers in adult and youth categories, and every participant is entered in a post-race prize raffle. Proceeds from the event support Steamboat Springs high school track and cross country programs. Parking is at the Quarry Lot off Forest Road 550; space may be limited. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
