Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt 7 June 2026
The Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt is held in Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, about 30 km north of Coober Pedy in outback South Australia. The park is a registered Aboriginal heritage site and the course runs through coloured hills, along the dog fence and returns to the lookouts.
Competitors can enter multiple running distances and a kids fun run:
- 42.2 km marathon
- 21.1 km half marathon
- 10 km run and 10 km team event
- 5 km run
- 2.5 km kids fun run for under 12 years
Bike ride distances are also offered:
- 10 km, 21.2 km, 36 km, 72 km
The event began as a route from Coober Pedy to the Breakaways and later became an annual fundraiser for local projects and causes. Since 2018 the Kanku-Breakaways Co-management Board has run the event to promote the park, encourage visitors to see it from different viewpoints and raise awareness of the Aboriginal cultural connection to the area.
Volunteers support activities at the start/finish hub, aid stations and event setup. Registrations for 2026 are open and participants may request a custom race bib and order an event t-shirt as part of registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
