Grand Canyon of the South Ultras
The inaugural Grand Canyon of the South Ultras is a trail running event held entirely on the Virginia side of Breaks Interstate Park in Breaks, VA. The event uses the park's trail network and canyon overlooks, with routes that include sandstone cliffs, ridgelines, forested hollows, rocky sections, and miles of singletrack through the Appalachian landscape.
Distances offered:
- 50K
- Morning 10K
- Sunset 10K
- Double 10K (20K)
The 50K course highlights ridgeline running, multiple scenic overlooks, technical mountain sections, and fully stocked aid stations. The Morning and Sunset 10Ks pass scenic overlooks and forested trails; the Double 10K combines both 10K courses so participants complete a full day of trail running and receive official results and recognition for both races.
The event takes place within a destination park with lodging, camping, on-site dining, and seasonal park amenities such as a water park, a mountain lake with paddle boat and kayak rentals, fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing. Registered runners receive a 10% discount on lodging at Breaks Interstate Park. Course routes are available as GPX files. Organizers plan to add more ultra-distance options in 2027 to showcase additional terrain and overlooks. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
