Grand Canyon of the South Ultras
The Grand Canyon of the South Ultras is an inaugural trail running event held within the Virginia side of Breaks Interstate Park and presented by Southwest Virginia Running. The course network uses park singletrack and mountain trails that pass sandstone cliffs, expansive overlooks, dense forests, and ridgelines in the Appalachian Mountains.
The weekend features multiple race options and a mix of terrain and aid support:
- Morning 10K
- Sunset 10K
- Double 10K (20K)
- 50K
The Morning 10K follows forested trails, rolling mountain terrain, and several scenic overlooks. The Sunset 10K is timed to showcase evening light on the canyon cliffs and cooler temperatures for late-afternoon running. The 50K traverses ridgelines, rocky and technical sections, and multiple overlooks, with significant elevation gain and loss and fully stocked aid stations.
The event takes place inside a destination park with lodging, camping, on-site dining, and seasonal recreational amenities. Registered runners are offered a 10% lodging discount at Breaks Interstate Park. The park also provides a mountain lake, seasonal water park, paddle craft rentals, fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails suitable for non-runners and families.
Race policies on registration, transfers, refunds, participant conduct, and race procedures are managed by the organizer and are available from Southwest Virginia Running. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
