Landscape and environment of North Gower - 11 miles
This is a circular walk of 11 miles starting and finishing at Penclawdd foreshore car park near Swansea (SA4 3YL) on Saturday 5 September 2026. The route gives a cross-section of North Gower features: a wide tidal estuary, saltmarsh, low rolling farmland, scattered villages, and long coastal horizons over the Loughor Estuary. The landscape is described as changing subtly, with shifts in texture and coastal character rather than dramatic elevation.
The walk incorporates local industrial and maritime heritage. Historic activities noted include cockle gathering as a seasonal industry, small-scale coal mining, limestone quarrying, and brickworks, with materials moved by local tracks and waterways. Llanelli's past heavy industry influenced employment across the estuary, and past saltmarsh drainage and land reclamation reflect efforts to expand agriculture. The present landscape is shaped by extraction, coastal trade, and estuarine working traditions.
The route generally heads south east and returns to Penclawdd via the Gower Way and Three Crosses. The leader is a retired geography teacher and local field guide with experience interpreting physical geography, geology, and industrial heritage on guided walks. Due to terrain the walk is not suitable for children. Participants should bring a flask and packed lunch. Well behaved, fit dogs on short leads are permitted. There are no toilets on the route.
