Galena River Fall Half Marathon & 8k
The Galena River Fall Half Marathon and 8k is an annual road running event held in Galena, Illinois. The race takes place on the Galena River Trail and features a flat course layout. Because of local festivities on the day of the event, the course closes at 11:00 AM, which means walkers are not permitted for the half marathon distance. Participants are required to finish before the designated course closure time.
The available race distances include:
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
- 8K (4.97 miles)
- Virtual race option
The half marathon follows an out and back route. Runners first head south on the trail to a turnaround at the 5.50 mile marker. After returning to the start line, participants continue north on the trail for a short second out and back section to complete the full distance. The 8k distance follows a similar format, with a turnaround point located at 2.50 miles.
Hydration and fuel stations are positioned at specific intervals along the route, specifically at miles 2, 3.5, 9, 11, and 12. These stations provide water, electrolyte beverages, and GU. Registered participants receive a shirt if they sign up by specific deadlines, and all finishers are awarded a medal. Age group categories range from 19 and under up to 90 and older. Packet pickup is available the day before the race and on the morning of the event at the Train Depot parking area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
