Galena 5k Stair Challenge
The Galena 5k Stair Challenge is a multi-format event held in historic Galena, Illinois, hosted by local emergency services including the Galena Area EMS District, the Galena Police Department, and the Galena Fire Department. The event takes place at Green Street Plaza and serves as a tribute to first responders and a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. The course utilizes the stairs and streets around Bench Street, with a maximum capacity of 200 timed athletes.
The event offers several participation options:
- 5K 7-Lap Stair Challenge Race: A professional chip-timed race consisting of seven laps of the stair course.
- 5K Stair Challenge Active Duty First Responders: A timed competitive division specifically for active duty emergency personnel.
- 1 Lap Fun Run/Walk: A non-competitive, untimed single lap of the course open to participants of various ages.
Timed participants are organized into waves of five people based on their registration order, with waves departing every minute. A visual system at the finish line on Bench Street displays bib numbers to help athletes track their individual lap counts. The competitive 5K divisions feature age groups ranging from 14 and under to 70 and over for both male and female runners.
The event staging occurs at Green Street Plaza, which includes first responder demonstrations and vendor areas. Registered participants receive a performance fabric t-shirt and a medal, provided they register before the specified August deadline. Packet pickup is available on the Friday afternoon before the race at the EMS District Station or on the morning of the event at the plaza.
