Galena 5k Stair Challenge
The event takes place in Galena, Illinois with staging at Green Street Plaza and the Bench Street area near City Hall and the Post Office/Custom House. It is hosted by the Galena Area EMS District, the Galena Police Department, and the Galena Fire Department. The event honors the heroes of 9/11 on the 25th anniversary and recognizes local first responders past and present. First responder demonstrations, the Galena Generals, the Jo Daviess County Mounted Patrol, and food vendors are present during the event.
Distances and formats:
- 5K 7-lap stair challenge, chip timed, competitive divisions by age and gender
- 5K Active Duty First Responders category, chip timed
- 1 Lap Fun Run/Walk, non competitive, mass start, not timed
Registration is online only beginning March 20, 2026, and closes when the timed field is filled or at midnight on September 11, 2026. A maximum of 200 timed participants is accepted; there is no timed participant limit for the fun run. Registrations after August 23, 2026 are not guaranteed an event t shirt. Packet pickup is available Friday at the Galena Area Emergency Medical Services District Station and Saturday morning at Green Street Plaza. Participants are encouraged to raise donations to support Galena based first responders; the top three individual fundraisers receive special prizes.
