Galena 5k Stair Challenge

The Galena 5k Stair Challenge is held in Galena, Illinois at Green Street Plaza near City Hall and the Post Office/Custom House. The event honors the heroes of 9/11 and local first responders, past and present. It is hosted by The Galena Area EMS District, The Galena Police Department, and The Galena Fire Department.

The event offers several formats:

  • 1 Lap Fun Run/Walk: A non-competitive run/walk/climb with a mass start, no timing, and a fee of $30.
  • 5K 7-Lap Stair Challenge Race: A professionally timed, competitive 5K event with chip timing and a fee of $35.
  • 5K Stair Challenge for Active Duty First Responders: The same timed 5K challenge with a fee of $30.

Registration is online only. For the timed 5K events, a maximum of 200 athletes are accepted and participants are started in waves of five. There is no limit on participants for the fun run/walk. The registration fee for each event includes an event t-shirt, water, and refreshments.

The event includes a fundraising pledge challenge where all participants are encouraged to raise at least $50 to support Galena-based first responders. The top three individual fundraisers receive special prizes. Age group awards are given for male and female participants across multiple categories.

Packet pickup is available on Friday at the DeSoto House Hotel or on Saturday morning at Green Street Plaza. An opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday morning, with an award ceremony later in the day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
