Flying Acorn Trail Run - Squirrel Hills Trail Park
The Flying Acorn is the second annual trail race held at Squirrel Hills Trail Park near Minnedosa, Manitoba. The community trails lie on Treaty 2 Anishinaabe territory and are part of the homelands of the Red River Métis.
Distances offered
- Half Marathon (21.1 km)
- 10K
- 5K
The trail network mixes decades-old double track with newly constructed single track and includes elevation changes and scenic viewpoints. The 5k course is about 5.4 km with approximately 90 m of elevation and follows the park perimeter loop. The 10k is roughly 10.6 km with about 190 m of elevation; its first half is mostly grassy double track with some connector trails, while the second half is compact dirt single track featuring a gradual 2 km uphill, a fast 2 km downhill, then a final 1 km climb to the trailhead. The half marathon comprises two laps of the 10k for an approximate total elevation gain of 380 m.
Two aid stations are placed on the 10k route to provide up to four opportunities for refueling; 5k runners have access to an aid station near the halfway point. This is a cupless event, so participants should bring their own water bottle. Over-the-ear headphones are not permitted; a single earbud is allowed.
Event amenities include officially designed race shirts, a finisher medal for every runner, awards for the top three male and female finishers, aid stations and a post-race snack area, post-race pizza for participants, and free professional on-course photos available after the event. Registration closes Tuesday June 30 at 11:59 PM CT. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
