First Responders "Bring in the Backup" Triathlon
The event honors multiple first responder groups including military, firefighters, nurses, EMS, dispatchers, corrections, and law enforcement. First responders lead off the race with other participants following as "backup." The event is a patriotic themed multisport race held in Northwood, Iowa at Swensrud Park swimming pool on July 25, 2026.
Race formats include individual and team options. Athletes may compete as individuals in triathlon, aquabike, or duathlon formats. A relay option is available for the sprint triathlon with 2-3 person teams.
Distances:
- Sprint triathlon: 150 meter swim, 10.4 mile bike, 5 km run.
- Aquabike: 250 meter swim and 10.4 mile bike ride.
- Duathlon: 1.5 mile run, 10.4 mile bike, 5 km run.
- Relay: 2-3 person team covering sprint triathlon distances.
The swim takes place at the Northwood pool. The bike course uses public highway sections and features rolling hills for most of the route. The 5 km run is mostly flat with one gradual hill. Entry fees provide race entry, a race t-shirt, a medal, timing of events, some prizes, and refreshments. Timing results are provided with detailed breakdowns. Proceeds will be donated to the Worth County Sheriff's Office, Northwood Fire and Rescue Department, and the Future First Responders Scholarship for Northwood-Kensett students.
