About the race
Feel The Burn Trail Run is a multi-distance trail event through Flock Hill, Castle Hill Station and Department of Conservation land in the Canterbury high country. The courses include varied surfaces such as gravel road, riverbed and singletrack, with sections across exposed ridges and rocky outcrops. River crossings and wet shoes are likely in places, and some sections have no water between aid stations. Distances: - 5 km - 10 km - 20 km - 30 km Aid stations are placed approximately every 6 km and provide food, electrolyte drink and water, plus a qualified first aider and radio communication.
The event uses timing chips and records split times on longer distances. Medical support is available from St Johns at the race base, and marshals, radios and tail-end personnel provide course monitoring. Organisers will watch weather and river levels in the lead up and may amend the course for safety; marshals should be followed in high-risk areas. Competitors must stay on the marked course; shortcuts or leaving the established track can lead to disqualification.
Recommended or required gear for the 20 km and 30 km events includes thermal base and mid layers, a seam waterproof jacket with hood, thermal hat, gloves, full-length thermal base pants and at least 1 litre of water. Early bird entry prices are listed and entries close 16th January 2027. Race entry fees support post-fire recovery work including native planting, weed control and pest management.
