Fairlie Lions Mackenzie Half Marathon
The Fairlie Lions Mackenzie Half Marathon is a community run held in Fairlie, New Zealand, in the Fairlie Basin. The event takes place in mid winter and features mountain views, river trails, gravel roads, water crossings, and hill climbs. Some sections of the course are opened only for the event.
The race programme reflects the event's Scottish heritage with tartan, tam o' shanters, and participants in kilts. Half marathon entrants have a whisky dram available at the top of a hill. The event is organised to raise funds for the Fairlie Lions and support local projects, with community volunteers involved in race-day activities such as food service and drink stations.
Distances offered include:
- 21.1 km Half Marathon run or walk
- 10 km River Dip run or walk
- 5.5 km Flat Jack
- 2.5 km Kids Dash
On-course terrain is varied and includes trail and road sections; the half marathon description notes hill climbs and river crossings. The atmosphere includes elements such as bagpiper performances and event volunteers operating hospitality areas. The organisers present the event as a community tradition that combines running and local fundraising. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
