Event Overview
The Estes Park Marathon & Half Marathon takes place in Estes Park, Colorado. The event schedule spans two days and features multiple distances and formats. The marathon and half marathon courses begin at the Dao House on Highway 7 and descend 1,500 feet within the first 6.5 miles. The terrain includes a mix of dirt trails, smooth surface roads, and pathways.
Participants in the half marathon follow a route that descends to the Lake Estes Trail with views of the Continental Divide. Marathon runners also travel on the Lake Estes Trail and complete the Dry Gulch-Devil's Gulch loop, passing the historic Stanley Hotel. The event offers several race options:
- Marathon (42.2 km)
- Half Marathon (21.1 km)
- Estes Trail Descent (7.75 miles)
- Longs Peak 5 Mile (8 km)
- Kids Fun Run (50 m to 800 m)
Logistics and Support
Shuttle transportation is provided for Sunday participants from Estes Park High School to the start line at the Dao House. Buses begin departing early in the morning, and runners select a departure time during registration. There is no return shuttle from the finish line to the start area. Aid stations and water stations are located approximately every two miles starting from mile 6, providing water, Gatorade, and gels.
For the marathon, a Sunrise Achievers category is available for walkers and slower runners who require additional time. This group departs early to ensure completion within the 6.5-hour course limit. All marathon participants must pass specific checkpoints by designated times to remain on the course, which officially closes at 11:15 AM.
Participant Benefits
All finishers receive a decorative medal, race photos, a performance race shirt, and access to food at the finish line. Adult participants also receive a free pint of beer at a sponsoring brewery. The Shining Twin Challenge is available for those who complete both the Longs Peak 5 Mile on Saturday and the Half Marathon on Sunday, awarding a special additional medal.
