Elkhorn Crest 50
Elkhorn Crest is a mountain ultramarathon held near Sumpter, Oregon on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The event offers two trail distances:
- 53 miles
- 50K
The course runs in the Elkhorn Mountains and is described as remote and technical. Runners must be able to remain self-reliant for long periods and handle technical terrain. Participants are required to have completed a trail ultramarathon before race day; registration is allowed prior to meeting this requirement but it must be fulfilled before the event.
Registration fees vary by entry period; listed ranges are $195 to $225 for the 53 mile and $150 to $180 for the 50K. Registration includes a shuttle to the start, a post-race meal, a finisher award, and free camping at the fairgrounds in Sumpter.
Race logistics note that bib pickup takes place at the fairgrounds on race morning and that all runners must use the shuttle from the fairgrounds to the start; crew may not drop runners off at the start due to limited parking. Post-race food and beer are provided to runners and volunteers; additional meal tickets must be prepaid. Awards are planned for the top three finishers in male, female, and Non-Binary categories.
Fairgrounds accommodations include free tent camping, showers for a fee ($2.50 for 4 minutes, quarters required), and about 20 RV sites on a first-come basis; some sites may have electricity or water but no sewer and no air conditioning. Quiet hours begin at 9 pm. Dogs must be leashed, cleaned up after, and not left unattended while their owners race.
The event is held under a special use permit in partnership with Wallowa Whitman National Forest. The organizer states a non-discrimination policy regarding race, color, national origin, sex, age, and disability.
The listing notes that weather in the Elkhorn Mountain Range in July can vary from highs in the mid 80s to 90s and lows into the mid 30s; mountain weather can change suddenly. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
