Djouce - The Ayling Abyss
The event is a marked mountain running race based at Djouce Woods, Old Long Hill Road, County Wicklow. The route returns to the traditional Ayling Abyss course with minor alterations to avoid storm damage. GPS use is allowed and the route is fully marked.
Distances:
- Long course: 11.67 km, 660 m climb
- Short course (junior): 4.9 km, 310 m climb
The race is listed at difficulty level 8 and is described as very close to level 9; it is therefore not really suitable for first time runners. The short course includes the Ayling Abyss and parents of children under 10 should note this terrain.
All runners must register on the night and all timing chips must be scanned before the race so organisers can account for everyone. No headphones of any type are allowed under IMRA rules. There will be kit checks at the start and at the finish and random checks may be carried out. Mandatory Level B kit includes a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, a charged mobile phone with emergency number stored, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. The exact kit to carry may be finalised on the day depending on conditions.
Car parking is limited; the main parking is at the first car park at Djouce Woods (grid ref 0213 131) with diversion to a second car park when full. Car pooling is recommended. Registration is in the Long Hill car park and the race start/finish is 500 m down the fire road at the first V junction. Prize giving and a raffle will take place at Berto's Pizzeria in Kilmac, which will open exclusively for the event and serve pizza and chips.
