About the race
The Canadian Death Race takes place in Grande Cache, Alberta, set against the backdrop of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This trail running event features a course through wilderness terrain, crossing three mountain summits. The route begins and ends on a plateau at an elevation of 4,200 feet.
The 118 km ultramarathon includes a total elevation change of over 17,000 feet (5,181 meters). A key feature of the course is a major river crossing at the Hell's Gate canyon, located at the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur Rivers. The race is designated as a qualifier for the Western States Endurance Run and the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 118 km (Solo or Relay)
- 42 km (Near Death Marathon)
The marathon distance involves an elevation gain and loss of 2,132 meters. Time limits are set at 24 hours for the ultra distance and 9.5 hours for the marathon. Aid stations are positioned throughout the stages to provide water and snacks, though supplies vary by location. Solo competitors may utilize drop bags at designated transition areas, provided they are submitted during Friday check-in.
Registration is capped at 1,000 racers. Categories include male and female solo divisions for Junior, Open, and Masters athletes, as well as co-ed, male, and female relay teams for the ultra distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
