Danby Down & Dirty
Danby Down & Dirty is a trail running event held in Danby State Forest near Spencer, NY, organized by the Finger Lakes Runners Club. The course is mostly singletrack with a short dirt road section of about 1.7 miles at the start and includes significant elevation change and rocky, uneven terrain.
The event offers two distances:
- 10K
- 23K (14.2 miles)
The 10K loop includes a climb to the Thatcher Pinnacles at about 1,700 feet with multi-county views partway through the loop, followed by a steep descent and several trail-road crossings. Since 2022 the longer course uses the full 8-mile Abbott Loop on its second circuit, adds a second trip to the Thatcher Pinnacles, and avoids running on forest roads for much of the extra distance. All turns are marked prior to the race and Wilderness Search and Rescue members are positioned at road crossings.
There is one aid station midway through the 10K that 23K runners pass twice, plus an aid location at the 10K mark before the longer course continues. Post-run food and drink are provided and drinkable prizes are awarded to top male and female finishers in multiple age groups. Port-a-johns are available; there are no showers or changing facilities. Trail hazards noted include uneven footing, mud, insects, fallen logs, and vehicles at road crossings. Online registration is required and the event is part of the FLRC Trail Circuit.
