Danby Down & Dirty

Danby Down & Dirty is a trail running event organized by the Finger Lakes Runners Club in Danby State Forest near Spencer, New York. The event offers two distances on mostly singletrack trails with a short dirt road section at the start.

• 10K
• 23K (14.2 miles)

The route uses the Abbott Loop (orange blazes), the main Finger Lakes Trail (white blazes), and 1.7 miles of dirt road at the start. Runners reach the Thatcher Pinnacles on the 10K loop for elevated multi-county views; the 23K repeats that climb and adds the full 8-mile Abbott Loop for the longer course. The start area is on Michigan Hollow Road near the intersection with Smiley Hill Road; parking is allowed on the west side of the road.

Course markings include flagging tape, chalk, ribbon, cones, and signs. Wilderness Search and Rescue members are positioned at road crossings. There is one aid station midway through the 10K (23K runners pass it twice) and an additional aid location at the 10K mark. Facilities include port-a-johns; there are no showers or changing rooms. Post-run food and drinks are provided.

Entry is by online registration; fees and eligibility details are set by the organizer. The race is part of the FLRC Trail Circuit and follows the club’s policies on conduct, awards, and safety. Trail hazards include uneven footing, mud, insects, fallen logs, and vehicle crossings, and participants should follow posted course markings.
