Event Overview
The Crested Butte Ultra takes place in the mountain town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The course traverses the Gunnison National Forest, featuring a mix of single track trails through mountain meadows and along mountain ridges. Participants run through high-altitude terrain with elevations ranging from approximately 8,822 feet to 11,291 feet.
The event is held in late September, coinciding with fall foliage and the presence of mountain wildflowers. All race distances start and finish at the Crested Butte Community School.
Distance Options
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 50 Mile: Includes 8,301 feet of elevation gain and loss.
- 55K: Includes 4,567 feet of elevation gain and loss.
- 35K: Includes 2,280 feet of elevation gain and loss.
Logistics and Requirements
This is a cupless event. Water dispensers are available at the start and finish lines and at all aid stations, but runners must provide their own reusable cups, bottles, or hydration bladders. Timing chips must be attached to the runner's shoe to record a finish time.
Packet pickup occurs on the morning of the race at the Crested Butte Community School. Participants must present a photo ID to receive their materials. Each finisher receives a custom race shirt, a custom hat, and a finisher's buckle. The event is authorized under a special use permit with the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests.
