About the race
Crater Trail Run is an off-road trail event on June 5, 2027 in Decorah, IA, held on the single-track trails of Van Peenen Memorial Park with start/finish at the park trail head on Quarry Hill Road. The course runs through Decorah’s bluff country and uses a 17-mile-plus system of mountain bike trails; trails are groomed and marked.
Distances offered cover short to ultra distances and include measured climb estimates for each route. Aid stations will provide water, a hydration drink, and food while supplies last, but runners should plan to fuel themselves. Specific aid and drop-bag locations described for each distance include a station at Death Valley and a station at the Palisades Park entrance; 50K runners encounter the Death Valley station four times and have designated drop-bag points at the start and Palisades Park entrance. 25K and shorter races also pass the Death Valley station multiple times.
Proceeds are split between the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, Decorah Human Powered Trails, and Decorah Park & Rec. The event is organized as a small grassroots fundraiser and will proceed in rain or shine; organizers do not guarantee refunds for registrants if the event is cancelled or if a participant cannot attend.
