Crater Trail Run : Van Peenen Memorial Park, Decorah, IA
Crater Trail Run is a set of off-road races held on the single track trails of Van Peenen Memorial Park near Quarry Hill Road in Decorah, Iowa. The course uses part of a 17 mile plus single-track mountain bike trail system. Trails are marked and groomed for racing.
Distances and approximate climbs are:
- 1 Mi
- 5 K 3.2 miles, 613 feet climbing
- 10 K 6.3 miles, 1383 feet climbing
- 25 K 15.5 miles, 2750 feet climbing
- 50 K 31.1 miles, 5500+ feet climbing
Aid stations will provide water, a hydration drink and food as supplies last. Runners are advised to plan to fuel themselves and may use designated drop bag locations on longer courses. Specific aid locations include a station at Death Valley that multiple lap runners pass repeatedly and a station at Palisades Park; additional drop bag locations are noted for 25K and 50K courses.
Packet pickup and check in take place on the Friday before the event at Decorah Hatchery, 406 W. Water Street, Decorah, IA, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The event proceeds are shared with the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, Decorah Human Powered Trails and Decorah Park and Rec.
All turns are marked. Headphones are not encouraged for safety. The event runs in most weather and may be postponed or cancelled in extreme conditions; refunds are not guaranteed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
