Crater Trail Run - Decorah, IA
The Crater Trail Run is a trail running event held in Van Peenen Memorial Park near Quarry Hill Road in Decorah, Iowa, on June 5, 2027. The course uses single-track trails that are part of a larger 17-mile plus mountain bike and trail system in the park. Trails are groomed and marked for the event.
Distances offered include:
- 1 Mile
- 5K 3.2 miles, 613 feet climbing
- 10K 6.3 miles, 1,383 feet climbing
- 25K 15.5 miles, 2,750 feet climbing
- 50K 31.1 miles, 5,500+ feet climbing
Aid stations provide water, hydration drink, and food while supplies last; runners are expected to carry their own fuel. Specific aid/drop bag locations are listed for each distance, including stations at the start area, the Van Peenen entrance, the Palisades Park entrance, and a location named Death Valley that 50K runners pass multiple times.
Proceeds from the event are allocated among the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, the Decorah Human Powered Trails, and the Decorah Parks and Recreation department. The event is organized as a grassroots fundraiser and does not guarantee refunds for registrants in the event of cancellation.
