Long Course (21.1 km)
The long course at Cougar Trail Run is a 21.1 km run or walk through Cougar Mountain Bike Park near Tokoroa. The route begins on the lower sports field with about 1 km of wide, relatively flat trail before the first climb to Jungle Junction, an intersection that is passed twice on the course.
The route includes single track through juvenile pine forest, mature pine forest and native bush, with short links on gravel forest road. The course includes themed trail sections and a final climb past a large cave up to Jungle Junction, followed by a sustained downhill to the finish. Total elevation gain is 354 m.
Terrain breakdown: about 59% pine and native bush single trail, 30% harvested forest single trail and 11% gravel forest road. Drink stations are located at 5.4 km, 11.7 km and 16.3 km and supply electrolyte, water, chips, biscuits and lollies. Disposable cups are not provided at drink stations; participants should use a reusable cup, bottle or hydration pack.
The park is primarily a mountain bike facility; some trails are designated mountain bike only and are not suitable for running. Trail signage indicates allowed use, and event day is the only day the course has full access to the park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
