Champions of Hope
Champions of Hope is an annual benefit event organized by the Southeast Health Foundation in Dothan, Alabama. It brings together cancer survivors, caregivers, supporters, and community members for races, a commemorative walk, and public activities that support local cancer services and patient care.
The event began in 2008 after a local nurse shared a vision of honoring and encouraging breast cancer survivors. The first gathering drew more than 500 participants. Since 2008 the event has raised over one million dollars to fund cancer awareness, early detection, intervention services, and programs such as cancer navigation, 3D mammography, post-mastectomy comfort kits, and patient information resources. In recent years the scope of supported services expanded to include broader cancer care in the region.
Event components combine competitive and non-competitive options, live entertainment, and community activities. Features regularly include a benefit concert, live bands and DJ sets, family-friendly and pet-friendly elements, food trucks, local vendors, a survivor tent, awards, commemorative t-shirts, and finisher medals. Fundraising proceeds have been used for specific equipment purchases to keep specialized services local, such as a blood irradiator for the medical center’s blood bank.
