Canyon de Chelly Ultra
The Canyon de Chelly Ultra is a trail race held on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. The event distance is 55K. The course begins at the entrance to the canyon and follows 17 miles up Canyon de Chelly, passing ancient ruins, petroglyphs and pictographs to Spider Rock. Runners then ascend Bat Canyon trail, gaining 1,200 feet from the canyon floor to the Spider Rock overlook, then return along the same route.
The route includes sand, single track, creek crossings and other natural obstacles. The first and last 2.5 miles run through sand and can have a similar effect to sustained large climbs. On the return, many canyon views appear different and offer new perspectives.
Registration was conducted by lottery, opening February 1 and closing February 7 local time. The lottery drawing was held live on Facebook on February 8 at high noon. A waitlist was made available for additional entrants.
