Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra
Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is affiliated with the Backyard Ultra Series and uses repetitive 4.167 mile loops through South Park and the Pollmiller Lake Campground system in West Point, Iowa. The course follows a single loop layout that is used for all laps and runs through paved bike path, paved road, crushed gravel, and some trail and grass.
Each loop must be completed within one hour to count. Start-of-loop warnings are given three, two, and one minute before the next loop. Participants must be in the starting corral and must begin each loop at the sounding of the bell. Except for restroom breaks, competitors may not leave the course until a loop is completed. No pacers or non-competitors are allowed on the course. Common aid stations are permitted but personal aid during a loop is not; each participant has a 10 foot by 10 foot area for crewing and aid.
The loop has about 175 feet of elevation gain and loss per circuit and is roughly 80% paved path and road, 10% crushed gravel, and 10% trail or grass. The event provides unlimited water, limited fruit and electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last. Camping is available on the soccer field infield near the start area on a first come first serve basis, and nearby Pollmiller Lake Campground offers electrical campsites. Registration deadlines determine eligibility for event apparel and amenities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
