Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra, West Point IA
Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra uses a repeating loop format at Pollmiller Lake Park in West Point, Iowa. Participants run successive 4.167-mile loops; each loop begins on the hour and must be completed within the hour to count. Warnings are given 3, 2, and 1 minute before each loop start, and runners must be in the starting corral and begin at the sounding of the bell.
The loop course is a single, unchanging route that mixes paved bike path and road (about 80%), crushed gravel (about 10%), and trail or grass path (about 10%). Each loop has approximately 175 feet of elevation gain and loss. Competitors may not leave the course during a loop except for restroom breaks. No pacers are allowed and no non-competitors are permitted on the course; personal aid during a loop is not allowed while common aid stations are available.
Event logistics include a 10 foot by 10 foot area per participant for crewing or tent setup, unlimited water, limited fruit and snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last. Camping on the soccer field infield is allowed on a first come first serve basis and field lights will be used after nightfall. Pollmiller Lake Campground offers reservable electrical sites and the course runs through the campsite area. There is ample parking near the shelter house with a blue roof on the south side of town.
