About the race
Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is a Backyard Ultra held in South Park / Pollmiller Lake Park in West Point, Iowa. The event uses a single repeating loop of 4.167 mile that runs through the campground and park area.
The course is mostly paved path and road with shorter sections of crushed gravel and trail; the published breakdown is about 80% paved path or road, 10% crushed gravel, and 10% trail or grass. Each loop has roughly 175 feet of elevation gain and loss.
The race follows the Backyard Ultra format: loops are run on an hourly schedule, each loop must be started at the sounding of the bell and completed within the hour, and the last runner to complete a loop that no one else can match is the winner. Rules include no pacers, no personal aid during a loop (common aid stations are allowed), staying on course except for restroom breaks, and allowing faster runners to pass. Competitors receive loop-by-loop distance results; if no runner completes an extra loop beyond all others, there is no winner.
Support infrastructure includes unlimited water, limited fruit, snacks and electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last. A 10 foot by 10 foot area is allowed per participant for crewing and tents. Camping is permitted on the soccer field infield with first come first serve placement and park lighting at nightfall.
