Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is a timed loop event held at South Park and Pollmiller Lake Park in West Point, Iowa. The format uses a single 4.167 mile loop repeated until one runner completes one more loop than any other. Each loop must be completed within one hour and the last runner to complete a loop within the allotted time is declared the winner; other entrants are recorded as DNF with distance covered noted.
The course combines paved bike path, paved road, crushed gravel, and some trail. It is roughly 80% paved, 10% crushed gravel, and 10% trail or grass, with about 175 feet of elevation gain and loss per loop. The loop runs through the campground area, with views of a beach and a concession stand in some sections.
Event services and rules include a 10 foot by 10 foot area per participant for crewing and tents, no personal aid during a loop with common aid stations allowed, unlimited water, limited fruit and snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last. Camping is allowed on the soccer field infield on a first come, first served basis and field lights will be used after nightfall. Pollmiller Lake Campground offers electrical campsites and both reservable and non reservable sites; nearby towns provide hotel options.
