Event

Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra held in West Point, Iowa, at South Park / Pollmiller Lake Park. The event uses repeated 4.167-mile loops through the Pollmiller Lake Campgrounds system. The course crosses paved bike path and road, crushed gravel, and trail or grass.

Race format and rules

The format uses repeated loops, with each loop required to be completed within one hour. Each new loop begins one hour after the previous loop. Participants must be in the starting corral and start the loop at the sounding of the bell. Restrooms are the only exception for leaving the course before a loop is finished. Personal aid during a loop is not allowed, though common aid stations are provided. No pacers are allowed and eliminated runners or other non-competitors may not be on the course. The last runner to complete a loop within the allotted time is the winner; all others are recorded as DNF (Did Not Finish). Slower runners must allow passes.

Course, camping and support

The loop has about 175 feet of elevation gain and loss per loop and is roughly 80% paved path/road, 10% crushed gravel, and 10% trail/grass path. Participants may camp on the soccer field infield by the start area; camping spots are assigned first come, first serve. Each participant is allowed a 10' x 10' area for crew and tent setup. The event provides unlimited water, limited fruit and snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee until supply runs out. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
