Break the Chains 5K
Break the Chains 5K is an evening road race held at East Riverfront Park in South Jordan, UT. The event features both a community night run and a separate kids run, and it is organized to raise funds for people who cannot afford support for addiction, suicide prevention, and mental health challenges.
The event partners with four nonprofit organizations that work with individuals and families affected by addiction, suicide, and mental health issues. Registration proceeds are used to provide resources, support, and reduced cost care for people who otherwise might go without help.
The race experience includes a symbolic element: participants begin wearing lightweight chains that represent burdens such as addiction, hopelessness, shame, fear, and despair. Near the end of the course participants cast off their chains and run to the finish to symbolize freedom and renewed hope. Each participant receives glow sticks to illuminate the course.
The evening program includes live music, local food trucks, community vendors, and family-friendly activities. The combination of the night setting, glow sticks, and community offerings frames the event as a public gathering focused on awareness, connection, and fundraising for mental health and addiction support.
