Brandon Hill Half (Kilkenny)
The Brandon Hill Half is a mountain half-marathon around Brandon Hill in County Kilkenny. The course distance is 21.27 km with total climb of 906 m. The route is fully marked and GPS use is not allowed. The event is included in the Leinster Half-Marathon League and carries an event difficulty rating of 9 with the listed factors of difficult terrain, more than 500 m ascent, and a distance over 10 km.
Competitors summit Brandon Hill twice, from opposite sides. The first summit comes early and is followed by a flowy, fast descent. The final summit is the last climb of the race and is followed by a largely downhill finish with about 3 km of descent. Between the summit efforts the course includes rolling trail, a new forestry climb with sections reported at 30 percent incline located roughly halfway through the race, and popular Strava segments with start and end signs on the busiest sections.
Mandatory kit is Level B - Standard and must be carried as advised at registration; required items include a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, a charged mobile phone with emergency number stored, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Random kit checks may be carried out and failure to carry required items may lead to denial of entry or disqualification.
The race starts at Raheendonore Carpark on the L4209 between Graignamanagh and Inistioge; the nearest eircode to the carpark turn off is R95 YF70. Parking is limited so carpooling is encouraged and competitors should follow marshal guidance on arrival. Prizegiving takes place at the finish line.
