About the race
The Black Gold Brute Obstacle Course Race is an OCR event held at the Team Auction Centre in Drayton Valley (formerly the Omniplex). The organizers note this is the fifth year of the event and that the course includes new obstacles and options to compete solo or as a team.
The course is built from one 4.33 km loop. Each loop features about 10 to 15 obstacles, and completing three loops provides more than 40 obstacles in total. Obstacles include jumping, crawling, hanging, swinging, balancing, climbing, and carrying; some obstacles are based on chance.
There are several race categories. The Competitive Heat is open to racers aged 14 and older and requires completion of three loops with penalties for failed obstacles; prizes are offered for the top three men and women. The Team Heat is for teams of five that complete three loops together; the first team to finish the three loops receives a free team entry for the next year. Open Heats run throughout the day and allow one, two, or three loops with no penalties; participants who finish at least one loop receive a finisher medal and event swag. The Savage Challenge is listed at 25.98 km and is a timed format with a six hour limit; competitors complete the initial three loops under the same obstacle rules then continue for additional loops as they can.
Event amenities listed include free parking, free key drop at the start area, a vendors alley, and a live DJ. Entry fees listed by age group are $30 for ages 5–12 (must run with a registered adult or older companion), $40 for ages 13–17, and $50 for adults 18 and older; the Competitive and Savage entries are listed at $50. Team pricing varies by team composition. The event requests volunteers at obstacle stations and notes volunteers who meet requirements may receive a free race entry for the following year.
