About the race
The Big Tex Backyard Ultra takes place on 11/07/2026 at Stephen F. Austin State Park in San Felipe, Texas (Park Rd 38, San Felipe, TX 77473). The course uses the park's wide, well maintained trails, primarily crushed gravel, with minimal elevation change. The venue provides a large grass area around a group dining hall screen shelter for personal crew setups, plus reserved campsites and full hookup RV sites.
The event follows a backyard ultra format: a "yard" of about 4.17 miles starts every hour on the hour and runners must finish each yard within the hour and be in the starting corral to begin the next one. Standard backyard rules apply: no artificial aids including trekking poles, no pacers, no crew or eliminated runners on course, and runners must carry their own aid on the course. Organizers give 3-, 2-, and 1-minute warnings before each start. Runners who cannot continue are required to check out with the race director.
All participants receive race apparel (limited quantities after a three week order deadline), a special finishers award, and access to fully stocked aid station support. Runners who complete 24 yards receive a 100 mile buckle. The overall winner is paid one dollar for every mile run; the seconder is paid one dollar for every yard finished and seconder payout rules apply when there is more than one seconder.
