Tradition and Route details
Beat the Bounds is an event rooted in the traditions of the Ullswater Valley. Participants follow the Patterdale Parish Boundary as closely as possible, covering a high-level route that includes notable locations such as Raise, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike, and Grisedale Tarn. The course also traverses Fairfield, Red Screes, the Kirkstone Pass, High Street, Angle Tarn, and Place Fell.
The event serves as a fundraiser for Patterdale Church of England School and St Patrick's Church. Originally founded as a walking event, it now includes options for technical ultra running and family participants. Due to the nature of the route following strict boundary lines rather than just established trails, navigation skills are required. Participants are provided with a tracker to monitor progress through strategic points.
Distance Options
The event offers four distinct distances to accommodate different experience levels:
- Full Boundary: A 28-mile route with 10,200 feet of ascent.
- 1st Half: A 16-mile section with 6,500 feet of ascent, ending at Kirkstone Pass.
- 2nd Half: A 14-mile section with 3,500 feet of ascent, starting from Kirkstone Pass.
- Minibeat: A 6-mile downhill family walk or solo challenge via Hartsop Hall.
Logistics and Support
The event utilizes a rolling start system. A supported checkpoint is located at Kirkstone Pass, offering snacks, hydration, and hot or cold drinks. Entry fees include a tracker, a bespoke race number, and finishers' soup and cake. For those completing only half of the boundary, public transport options are available between Patterdale School and Kirkstone Pass.
