Authentic Phidippides Run : Race overview
The 10th International Authentic Phidippides Run is an ultramarathon organized by the non profit Athletic Cultural Association Authentic Phidippides Run. The 2026 edition is an anniversary event dedicated to the route creator Takis Skoulis and takes place 19–23 November 2026.
Two official route options are offered:
- Athens to Sparta to Athens : total distance 485.3 km, out-and-back on the same historic road
- Athens to Sparta to Athens to Marathon : total distance 524.9 km, finishing at Marathon
The course follows the ancient road through Eleusis, Megara, Ancient Corinth, Ancient Nemea, the Artemisio pass at 1,227 m, Tegea and Tripoli before reaching the statue of Leonidas in Sparta, then returns by the same route to Athens. The event includes multiple central checkpoints and timed cutoffs at key stations along the route.
Safety and services The race provides GPS tracking devices with an SOS button and electronic live tracking, electronic timing and intermediate check points, medical coverage by doctors and EKAB rescue teams, and coordination with local hospitals. There are 77 supply tables along the route and 11 central stations offering hot meals and rest facilities. Personal supply packages may be delivered to 11 central stations under labeling and inspection rules.
Entry and rules No competitive qualification requirement is imposed but runners must be 18 or older and submit a medical certificate dated within six months before the race. Support crew rules, equipment requirements for night visibility and mandatory GPS use are specified. The organizer enforces cutoffs and may disqualify runners who breach rules or safety orders.
