Addo Elephant Trail Run
The Addo Elephant Trail Run is a multi-day trail running event held in the Addo Elephant National Park area from 25 to 28 March 2027. Founded in 2005, it is one of South Africa’s oldest ultra trail events and the country’s oldest 100 mile ultra trail race. The event offers four distances:
- 21 km
- 50 km
- 50 Mile
- 100 Mile
Course routes pass through remote sections of Addo Elephant National Park and the Zuurberg mountains. Terrain includes single track, 4x4 tracks, old jeep tracks and stretches of dirt road. Runners encounter multiple river crossings, sustained climbs and expansive summit views. Wildlife commonly seen on route recces includes kudu, impala, baboons, ostriches, bushbuck, jackals, reedbuck, hartebeest, mountain zebra, warthogs and eland. For safety runners are kept away from park areas with lions, elephant, rhino or buffalo.
Race logistics note that starts and checkpoints use locations such as Addo Main Camp, Kabouga Gate near Kirkwood and Hayterdale Trails, with all races finishing at Zuurberg Mountain Village. Mandatory kit checks are part of registration and participants must carry specified safety and survival items on course; common required items include a water carrying system (minimum 1.5 litre capacity), emergency whistle, GPS with course, waterproof jacket, space blanket, reusable cup and a torch or headlamp with spare batteries. Entry is limited to 600 places across the four distances and early bird entries and payment plan options are detailed by the organiser.
