9/11 Memorial 5K
The Valdosta Fire Department organizes the annual 9/11 Memorial 5K in Downtown Valdosta, Georgia. The event commemorates the events of September 11, 2001, and honors first responders. This race follows a patriotic theme, and community members often participate by wearing costumes or displaying decorated signs along the route.
The event features a single distance:
- 5 km
The 5 km course is a fast out-and-back route that passes by Valdosta State University. The start and finish lines are located at the Lowndes County Historical Courthouse at the intersection of N Valley and N Patterson. This course is officially USATF-certified (Certificate GA24032WC), meaning times recorded here can be used as qualifying standards for other major marathons and road races.
Participants can register as individuals or as part of agency teams for an inter-agency competition. The event includes a pre-race ceremony featuring a Moody AFB Honor Guard and remarks from local officials. Awards are issued to top overall male and female finishers, masters categories, and the top two finishers in several age brackets ranging from 11 and under to 70 and over. Recognition is also given to the oldest and youngest finishers, as well as the most patriotic participant. All proceeds from the race are donated to Valor Service Dogs, Inc.
