1000 Hills Challenge

The 1000 Hills Challenge is a trail running event at Nagle Dam in the Valley of 1000 Hills, KwaZulu-Natal, held on 12 July 2026. The event uses loop courses that pass through rolling hills, red cliffs, dense bushveld and African thornveld around the dam.

Long-course routes circumnavigate the dam, include riverine sections and river crossings. The short course passes through a tunnel and follows the lower half of the dam. Wildlife sightings reported along the routes include zebras, giraffes, impalas and Nguni cattle, and a variety of local birdlife.

Course options and technical details:

  • 39 km marathon course, 1446 m elevation, 3 aid stations
  • 20 km long course, 906 m elevation, 3 aid stations
  • 10 km medium course, 343 m elevation, 2 aid stations
  • 5 km short course, 200 m elevation, 1 aid station

There is no compulsory kit requirement listed, and courses are subject to change. GPX route files are available for download. A race village at the venue offers food and drinks, massage therapists and trail gear, and provides a community setting for participants.
